Movement starts with an impulse. A neural impulse decides which

motor units to fire, in what order, and how strong. But in the

presence of pain, the nerve’s signal is changed and muscle

activation patterns change. The clinician thinks of muscle spasm,

inhibition or weakness and uses exercises to correct muscle

activation. The postural dysfunction, muscle imbalances and trigger

points seem to confirm that the problem resides in the muscle.

Is myopain a problem of muscle, or . . .the neural impulse?

• Does the impulse fail to create movement?

• Is the signal unintelligible?

• Does the signal activate the wrong motor units?

• Does the signal tell the muscle to not move?

The onset of pain changes the impulses sent by the nervous system. Treating the muscle may only address the symptoms. Restoring a healthy neural signal prevents recurrent or chronic pain.
